Anybody can call themselves an “accountant”. Unfortunately, the same applies to “web designer”.
Nowadays, almost anybody “can” build a website, just like anybody “can” do their company tax return. There are loads of user-friendly tools available, even free ones, that allow you to do either of those things, but let’s be honest, the final result will probably not be as good as if it had been done by someone whose job it is.
Apart from the visual aspect (a good template or website “theme” can sometimes do the trick), there are eye-tracking studies, user behaviours studies, conversion improvement techniques, accessibility issues, search engine optimisation barriers, and countless other areas that need to be considered to make a success of your website.
Just like an accountant is the best person to go to when you want your SA or company accounts to be done properly, a professional web designer should be your port of call if you want your website to generate leads for your practice.
I’ll cover the difference between “generic” web designers and specialist providers in another article, but for now here’s a list of the main suppliers of websites for accountants in the UK (sorted alphabetically):
- Accountant Websmiths
- Online Practice
- Pearson Ventures
- Practice Track Online
- PracticeWEB
- Total Solution
- WebWatch UK
You may be wondering: why on earth is he linking to his direct competitors?
The answer is simple. Competition is GOOD. It’s what makes us improve our services and offering, it’s what makes us up our game and better ourselves. It’s certain that our – business – lives would be a lot easier if there was no other companies specialising in providing websites for accountants, but they would also be a lot less interesting and gaining new clients every weeks would not be as rewarding.

I get website resources and newsletters of Accountant Websmiths and I am very pleased with the quality and their customer service.
Hi Neil, thank you for the feedback :)
Hiya, I find it really interesting to see you linking to other sites. I do agree that competition is good and keeps everyone reaching to a higher standard but I think I would let people discover my competition themselves! Still, people must appreciate your honesty and it takes a lot of confidence to present people with competitors in your own field.
